Big Day: Mary and Linda

Two weeks ago, a Federal Judge declared Indiana’s ban on same sex marriages unconstitutional. That week, same sex couples from all of the state got legally married and it was awesome. That same Friday, two days after the ruling, the Federal appeals court issued a stay on the ruling thus stopping all same sex marriages (again) in Indiana.

I was lucky enough to photograph two weddings during that 48 hour period. Mary and Linda were married by the Deputy Mayor of South Bend, Mark Neal that Friday… mere minutes before the stay was issued. Their ceremony at the County City Building in South Bend was intimate, fun, joyful, and packed with friends, family, and supportive members of the community. It was an amazing moment to be a part of.

When the original ruling was passed, Mary was in Texas. She flew home immediately while Linda planned everything as quickly as possible. Everything came together perfectly at the last minute!

That moment where everything is ready and all of the details are finalized and they are READY TO GET MARRIED!

This next photo was taken at the moment Deputy Mayor Mark Neal informed Linda and Mary that their wedding had occurred mere minutes before the stay was issued. It was a moment filled with relief and sadness and a strong resolve to keep fighting for marriage equality. It was a moment I will never forget.

Keep fighting.
